Interstate Font is a digital typeface conceived in 1993–1999 by Tobias Frere-Jones and distributed by the Font Bureau. The typeface is based on Style Type E of the FHWA series of fonts; a signage alphabet designed by Dr. Theodore W. Forbes for the United States Federal Highway Administration in 1949.
While Interstate is primarily designed for signage, it has features that make it suitable as a text typeface for print and on-screen, and this aspect of it became popular in the 1990s. Because of the great tape, it is ideal for use in the display in print. He later on created another signage typeface, Whitney published by Hoefler & Co. , which looks similar to its predecessor but less ornate and more efficient for everyday printing; text, body, or headline use.
