Basis Grotesque Font was designed by Anthony Sheret and Edd Harrington for Colophon Foundry, the design firm where they both work. Originally created for the photography magazine Hotshoe in 2012 but then subsequently expanded and released as commercial fonts in 2015.
Basis Grotesque draws on classic grotesques that have been digitized for modern use. It has its own unique character and balance, but in the end it is just a matter of commercial practicality. Available in five weights with matching italics as well as in its monospaced version.
